THe Struggle Youth Development Curriculum

Program Overview

The Struggle introduces a year-long youth development curriculum designed to engage 9th through 12th grade students in meaningful growth and personal development. This structured, grade-specific system strengthens comprehension, critical thinking, character development, and job readiness skills through a proven, goal-oriented, and results-driven approach.

The Struggle

For many students, the struggle lies in identifying their sources of strength while maintaining motivation and consistency when facing internal and external challenges. Navigating these pressures requires resilience, self-awareness, and intentional decision-making.

  • Negative attitudes and limiting belief systems
  • Lack of focus and intrinsic motivation
  • Feelings of powerlessness and emotional distress
  • Peer pressure and bullying

Establishing a Shared Vision

The Struggle: Freshman Curriculum

The goal of this curriculum is to equip students with the essential tools needed to successfully transition from middle school to high school. Students will be fully engaged and immersed in understanding the critical role they play as freshmen, while developing the mindset and skills necessary for long-term success.

Through a structured and intentional approach, students are guided to build a strong foundation in personal development, accountability, and academic readiness.

 

Driving Change Sophomore Curriculum

This curriculum is designed to equip students with the skills and mindset necessary to become agents of change in their own lives and communities. Students will critically examine their ethics, values, and belief systems, identifying which traits to strengthen, adopt, or release in order to achieve personal and academic success.

Through guided discussions and practical application, students will develop a deeper understanding of the various internal and external factors that influence decision-making and life choices.

 

Concepts include, but not limited to:

  • The impact of parenting, peers, and society on perceptions and values
  • Transitioning from childhood to adolescence
  • The benefits of positive affirmation, self-talk, and reflecting on past successes
  • Effective methods of conflict resolution
  • Understanding how attitude and behavior directly influence performance

Defining Success

Junior Curriculum

This curriculum focuses on developing students into emerging leaders who can effectively communicate, influence, and positively impact their peers. Students will explore the key qualities that support leadership, peer mediation, and effective communication, while also learning how to model behaviors that leave a lasting legacy for underclassmen to follow.

Through structured modules and real-world application, students will strengthen their ability to lead with purpose, navigate challenges, and prepare for future success.

  • The Value of Self-Promotion
  • Managing Frustration, Fear, and Disappointment
  • Foundations of Mentorship
  • Career Exploration and Financial Awareness
  • Assertiveness vs. Aggression

Determining Destiny

Senior Curriculum

This curriculum is designed to prepare students for life beyond high school by equipping them with the tools and strategies needed to successfully transition into college, careers, and adulthood. Students will learn how to effectively brainstorm, plan, and execute their next steps with clarity and confidence.

Discussions and activities are centered on helping students remain focused during their final year while positioning themselves for long-term success. Students will also develop techniques to enhance their employability, strengthen their personal brand, and increase college readiness.

  • Interviewing Techniques
  • Completing Effective Applications
  • Networking and Relationship Building
  • Mentorship and Professional Guidance

Customer-Focused Engagement & Impact Framework

  • Concepts are strategically aligned with School Improvement Plans (SIPs) to ensure measurable academic and organizational outcomes
  • Promotes collaborative stakeholder engagement, including students, educators, administrators, and community partners
  • Leverages Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)-funded initiatives to support school improvement, strengthen accountability systems, and implement evidence-based interventions.
  • Enhances Behavior Intervention strategies, reinforcing positive conduct and structured accountability systems
  • Supports improved student achievement, academic growth, and overall school performance through alignment with ESSA accountability metrics and performance indicators.
  • Recognized within Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA)-approved frameworks, connecting education to career readiness and workforce development pathways.  
  • Utilizes a Customized Differentiated Learning Model to address diverse learning styles and developmental needs
  • Acts as a strategic perception and academic data driver, leveraging data-driven insights to optimize instructional delivery and maximize student engagement outcomes.
